I came across this poem on the net a couple of weeks ago, it had such an impact on me, cos It’s talking about what I have recently become sensitive to, Why are we here? What are we here to do? This life has to have a purpose….
We are on earth for a moment ( a dash ) . We are travellers through this world, who we really are, our destination and resting place is in eternity. Death is but a transition, and what you do in the DASH is valuable currency in eternity…
So, we should not just enjoy this poem but reflect on our DASH in this life.
Author: Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning to the end He noted that first came her date of her birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth. For it matters not how much we own;
the cars, the house, the cash,
what matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
that can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life’s actions to rehash
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent your dash?

After a long search for the definition of success, i recently found one that gave me a feeling of aha, it says ‘success is the fulfilment of purpose’.
irrespective of man’s definitions and standards, we are only successful in life and eternity when we have fulfilled God’s purpose for our lives.
and just like the biblical parable of the talents clearly explained, its not about the how much but how well we use what He has given us.
that is all that will ultimately matter.
thanks for sharing this inspiring poem
“…only those who love her know what that little line is worth.”
This is so very true,
In essence, in as much as our lives is ours to live,
i say, “you never know who & who admires you or
see you as a role model until you disappoint them.”
Oh, our lives invariably are not just ours to live,
so many hang on to what we say (or do); we don’t
want to lead them astray.
my dad passed August 2, 2007…this was one of the last things he talked about…his dash..and i am proud to say that i am his son…and he lived his dash very well..thank you so much for this beautiful message
